More from Mallorca!

JR and Duck have spent a day on the beach. As the sun started to set, they seized the opportunity to find a higher perch to capture as much of the sun on their beaks as they could possibly get.

JR and Duck also like sightseeing, taking in as much local culture as they possibly can, whether it be seeing statues in the hotel garden ...

... or visiting ancient cities. They found the old city within the medieval walls of Alcudia to be fascinating, with a lot of little nooks and crannies down winding narrow roads where they could sit and have a coffee or poke around in shops.

But ducks work up an appetite when there is so much to see and do! They were persuaded to go for a KFC after a long waddle on the beach, but they couldn´t bring themselves to eat the chicken, as it´s possible that the chicken was a distant relative. They stuck to french fries and onion rings as that was a much safer option!

Ducks in Mallorca

JR and Duck loved the fact that it is only a two hour flight from the UK to Mallorca. A longer flight would have left their little wings too tired to enjoy their holiday!

What a difference in weather! From the cold, dampness of Birmingham, they arrived safely in the warm sunshine of Alcudia. Their first task was to take the chill out of their little bones by putting plenty of sunscreen on their feathers and getting out beside the pool!

The island of Mallorca is a beautiful place. There are mountains, beaches and the scent of aromatic flowers in the air.

JR and Duck were very surprised to see a friend turn up at the same resort: Devil Duck had also had enough of the long cold winter in England and booked a package holiday to Alcudia. He had considered going to Magaluf, which is usually more his kind of place - being a devilish sort of duck, of course - but had opted for a quieter holiday to soak up sunshine.
The two little ducks decided not to spend too much time in Devil Duck´s wayward company and headed off to the marina for a view of the sunset over the hills.

Being two tired little ducks, they headed back to the hotel soon afterwards for a good night´s sleep so they would be ready to hit the beach the next day!

Less Than 48 Hours to Go!

JR and Duck aren't always this helpful around the house, but when it comes to going on holiday, they are the first two to wade in with a helping hand. Or wing.

Unfortunately, at the moment they keep getting in the way! If they aren't careful, they will end up in the suitcase, and that's no way for a duck to travel!

At Last ...

J R and Duck had a miserable winter. After enduring snow, rain and dark days, the news came: it's time to go on holiday again!

And though they have over two weeks until taking off, today they have let me know that they are eager to start packing and get their holiday under way!

Thursday, 2 October 2008

J R and Duck needed one last break before the cold English winter set in. They decided a trip to a Greek island would be in order!

They were a bit apprehensive to be told they were going to Malia in Crete. The news was not very good. It was a resort full of drunken youths in search of partying 24 hours a day.

But they worried for no reason. The early October sun was warm, the food was good and the people were lovely, and during the week they only saw one falling over drunk British girl. They saw more of those in Birmingham on a Wednesday night on Broad Street!

They did make a friend at the hotel. Devil Duck had hitched a ride in a suitcase as a stowaway and joined them on their hotel balcony for tea.

They enjoyed walks along the beach and feeling the sun shine down on their little beaks. J R in particular loved being buried in the sand, but Duck never did like the way the little grains of sand felt stuck between his feathers.

In the evening, they visited the old town in Malia for moussaka and ouzo! Well, they wanted to try the ouzo, but unfortunately J R and Duck were much too young to be partaking of that potent drink!

But after seven days of laying by the pool and relaxing, they knew they had to return to England for a long winter.

JR and Duck and the Hungarian Grand Prix

JR and Duck love their sporting events. They took the opportunity to visit Budapest to do some sightseeing and attend the Hungarian Grand Prix. Being a couple of posers, they smiled for the camera on a walk across the Chain Bridge, which is one of many bridges across the Danube between Buda and Pest.

They also took a ride up the side of a hill on the Pest side of the river, being very lazy ducks who could not be bothered to either walk up the rather steep hill or fly to the top to visit the Royal Palace.

But the main purpose of their visit was to see the Hungarian Grand Prix. The sounds of the engines were very loud in their little ears, but they loved the great seats in the Red Bull Stand on the second to last corner of the track! They could cheer on all their favourite drivers, though neither one of them seem to be Ferrari fans.

They never realised that outside the track, in the beer tents, there would be dancing girls! My goodness, how the ducks are growing up!

JR and Duck in Gran Canaria

JR enjoyed his trip to Portugal in March so much that he could not wait until his holiday to Gran Canaria. The wet and miserable English weather even gets on a duck's nerves sometimes!

On this holiday, JR had two new traveling companions. Braden had never been on a proper holiday abroad, and he saved up his pennies for spending money and even ordered a book to learn how to speak Spanish.

More importantly, JR had his friend Duck traveling with him. Duck had had a traumatic spring. When the builders were in the house fitting a new shower, Duck and all his other little rubber duck friends were put into a cupboard. Perhaps Duck was tired of being locked away with the towels and spare toothpaste and jumped off the shelf. Perhaps one of the other ducks was jealous of Duck's bright red feathers and pushed him.

The result was that Duck found himself in a plastic bag that previously had held toilet roll, on his way downstairs to be put out for the weekly rubbish collection. Fortunately he was spotted, and JR invited Duck to become his companion on his international adventures.

Oh how good it felt to sit out in the bright Canarian sun! JR and Duck spent as much time as they could out where the sunshine was warm on their beaks.

Even Braden could not resist the lure of the bright sun, though he has probably picked up a few things from living in England for ten years. He acted like a typical Englishman by not taking his socks off whilst sunbathing.

Unfortunately he did remove his shoes, which turned out to be a bit much for two little ducks!

Luckily JR and Duck made a full recovery, but for two days JR refused to come down from a high position where he would be well away from human feet.

Once Braden and Duck convinced him to come down, the whole family went for a round of 18 holes of crazy golf in Maspalomas.

Melinda won, but the ducks didn't care. They were having too much fun exploring the various characters at each hole.

After warming up on the crazy golf course, it was time to play 18 holes of proper golf at the local golf club. The ducks decided that they would caddy, though they really spent all their time chasing dragonflies and trying to steal the golf cart!

JR and Duck often wondered where all the canaries were in the Canary Islands. They searched high and low, but they never found a single canary. They did, however, meet a distant cousin.

There didn't seem to be any birds in the ocean when they checked. They decided that canaries must not like the ocean very much.

Before they knew it, it was time to board the coach to take them to the airport.
Their holiday was almost over. They were sad, but not too sad because they knew it would not be long until they were off on their travels again. In fact, they knew that they would be heading out very soon to Budapest for a long weekend in a new city with some Formula One to watch!
